New poem by BW Derge, written in 2025 about the primary emotions, Sadness, Joy, and Anger as personified gods. "The Trifecta"
2025 American Poetry:
"The Trifecta" (Primary Colors)
Did a little bit of misery
Every hurt anyone?
Its power seems to be
Relentless on-pouring,
Slowly adding another speck
Of sand to the pile,
And if left unchecked,
It will soon be a mountain
Crushing your bones
Under the weight
Of insurmountable sadness…
-

It doesn’t take much
To inflate us
With just the smallest taste
Of happiness…
We rapidly expand
Like the early universe.
Then we burst
Into a million little pieces,
Each cold and alone,
Abandoned shards in the dark,
Wondering what happened
To the warmth
Of former stars, now gone…
-
Enraged;
Invigorated by anger,
Forcing change, insisting
New life to emerge,
For more consciousness

To wake up and look around
And find something
With at least a vague
Resemblance to love,
To the heat we felt as atoms,
Before the natural gods
Came forth and separated us
Into quarks and massive objects
Floating in the void…
-
And as humans, much later,
We tango with these three
Emotional monsters unsteadily.
The sadness laden
In the futility of existence,
The joy to possess us
When realities gleam
Good fortune upon us.
And the anger that swells
When lust and love are denied
And then it is hell, we occupy
Until fighting our way back out
Evading delusions,
By chasing truth,
No matter how painful
The flames of truth and beauty
Burn upon the flesh.
-

We experience the ecstasy
Of live without a body –
As a pure infinite ghost,
But the sadness falls
Like little wet raindrops,
Soon becoming a drizzle,
Then a torrential downpour storm
To become a flood

That drowns us with sadness,
And there’s nothing else,
It is an endless cycle,
We cannot help it or stop it
Or prevent it from always spinning…
Surrender and give in,
Go with the flow, there is love
Somewhere…
What else is there to know?
