Opinion Piece: Top 5 Best Video Games of All Time

In my extremely biased opinion, these are the best video games of all time. Having grown up in the GameCube era as a big Nintendo guy, these are my favorite 5 video games that I still play.

Best Video Games of All Time

… in my opinion

by BW Derge

I’ve been playing video games since the NES days and then moved to SEGA Genesis and then got a Nintendo 64, and then the GameCube. And of course I had several iterations of Gameboy and DS handhelds. As an adult, I’ve acquired an Xbox 360, Wii, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.

5. Mortal Kombat II

Sega Genesis (1993)

Mortal Kombat II for the Sega Genesis provided endless gameplay back in the day. I should I also note that I’m not repeating systems or franchises on this list, or they would probably all be Mario games, mostly on the GameCube. In fact, the only version I have this game currently is in Midway’s Arcade Hits 2 for the Nintendo console. Nonetheless, the characters, fatalities, hidden characters, and fatalities kept each game fresh and it was one of the best multiplayer games back in the day, when systems had only 2 controller ports.

4. South Park: The Stick of Truth

Xbox 360 (2014)

While the sequel “Fractured but Whole” for the PlayStation 4 is a great game, the turn-based fighting in this one is far superior. Not since the original Pokémon Gameboy games had an RPG captured my attention like this. The story, cut scenes, South Park crudeness, and collectibles are just the highlights. The love for video games and the small mountain town in Colorado is evident across every inch of this virtual world. Definitely one of the best games of the last 2 decades. And yes, I think the South Park games are better than Grand Theft Auto.

3.  NFL Blitz

Nintendo 64 (1998)

While subsequent version of Blitz were fun, none were as enthralling as the original. The fast-paced gameplay, frenzied style, and fun presentation has kept me coming back to this game for almost 3 decades now. And this came out after the Packers went to back-to-back Super Bowls so they are one of the best teams in the game (go pack go!). I am a big fan of sports games, specifically Madden NFL, NBA 2k, and MLB the Show, but none of them can touch the Blitz franchise.

(And EA really needs to end that deal with the NFL.) In fact, this is the best Nintendo 64 game in my opinion, beating even Majora’s Mask (my favorite Legend of Zelda game) and 007: Goldeneye. Mario Kart 64, Super Mario 64, and Mario Party 2 are also great, but I chose to only include one “Mario” game for this list and it is up next at #2!

2. Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour

GameCube (2003)

While the Mario Golf series has some great entries – specifically for the Gameboy Color, Nintendo DS, and the Switch – none of them come close to Toadstool Tour. It has a plethora of challenges, trophies, courses, and modes of gameplay. Not only the that, but the controls and the world physics are practically perfect. One slight budge of the C-stick can mean a hole-in-one or a shot in the rough. As for golf itself, I am not much of a fan.

I’ve never played a full round, I don’t follow the sport, but I LOVE Mario Golf. Something about Bowser holding a golf club is so much more entertaining than, you know, Tiger Woods or some guy.

1. Tetris

NES (1989) / Tetris DS (2006) / Tetris 99, Switch (2019)

Both the oldest and most recent game on this list, nothing beats Tetris. If you play this game long enough, you enter a Zen-like trance when playing. There’s the classic gameplay, the simple premise, and then infinite alterations of ways to play the game. The video game even acts as an appropriate metaphor for life itself (see below). The NES and Gameboy versions are timeless, the DS version is fun and included different modes, and the Tetris 99 for the Nintendo Switch is just mesmerizing.

Playing against 98 other people online is addictive, challenging, and still good old Tetris. Plus, nothing beats the feeling of winning a round of Tetris against 98 players.
