The top five episodes of “The Simpsons” – my extremely biased opinion. Focusing mostly on the “Golden Years” of the show, here are my Top 5 Simpsons Episodes with Quotes
The Top 5 Episodes of "the Simpsons"
5. New Kid on the Block
(Season Four, episode 8, 1992)
The image of Bart’s crush Laura ripping his heart out his chest and throwing it in the treehouse’s trashcan always stuck with me. But, this episode is great for many reasons. One – written by Conan. Two – the other plotline where Homer takes the Frying Dutchman to court over its “all you can eat” special is classic. Three – the whole bit with Bart not washing his hand is also one of the best moments of the show.

“Marge: We drove around until 3:00 in the morning looking for another open all-you-can-eat seafood restaurant.
Lionel Hutz: And when you couldn't find any?
Marge: [crying] We went fishing!
Lionel Hutz: [to the jury] Do these sound like the actions of a man who'd had ALL he could eat?”

4. Lisa on Ice
All but one of the episodes on this list is special to me because it taught me an important lesson. #5 taught about heartbreak and this one was about the importance of sibling bonds. The end where Lisa and Bart hug in the middle of the ice rink is a powerful scene. Unlike other episodes of the show, the plot is wholly consumed by Bart and Lisa’s rivalry and their participation in an ice hockey league. Homer is highly involved in the sport and Marge likewise worried about this.
Favorite Quote:
“Marge: Now, Homer, don't you eat this pie.
Homer: All right, Marge. [Marge exits]
Homer: All right, pie. I'm going to start doing this... [makes chomping motion]
Homer: And if you get eaten, it's your own fault. [He shuts his eyes, and moves toward the pie, making chomping motions, but hits his head on the stove hood]
Homer: OW! AH! Oh, my... oh, to hell with it. [eats the pie]”

3. 22 Short Films About Springfield
(Season Seven, episode 21, 1996)
This is just good writing. If you’re a returning reader to this site, you may already know my fondness for Pulp Fiction. These 22 “short films” combine absurdism (Steamed Hams), parody (Tarantino), and numerous other elements of humor. Milhouse and Bart’s escapade is a jewel to behold. Only season twelve’s Trilogy of Errors rivaled this episode in innovative storytelling. This episode is special to me not because it taught me something like the rest of this list, but rather that it is just… really good.

“Super Intendent Chalmers: Aurora Borealis? At this time of year? At this time of day? In this part of the country? Localized entirely within your kitchen?
Principal Skinner: Yes.
Chalmers: May I see it?
Skinner: No.”

2. And Maggie Makes Three
(Season Six, episode 13, 1995)
Having a kid can sometimes mean sacrifice, having your soul crushed, and many other things that are ultimately worth it. It’s sappy but it’s true and when I became a parent, this episode really put things into perspective. It’s a funny flashback episode that ends with the tear-jerker “do it for her” sign and Maggie saying “Daddy.” At the end of the day, sometimes you’ve got to give up your dream job at the bowling alley to return to the soul crushing environment of corporate America to earn a better living for yourself and family.

“Homer: Go, Knight Boat, go!
Bart: [groans] Oh, every week there's a canal.
Lisa: Or an inlet.
Bart: Or a fjord.
Homer: Quiet! I will not hear another word against the Boat.”

1. El Viaje Misterioso de Nuestro Jomer
(The Mysterious Voyage of Homer)
[Season Eight, episode 9, 1997]
Why is this, of the hundreds of episodes of ‘The Simpsons,’ my favorite? There are numerous reasons. It has one of my favorite quotes of all time, said by Marge (see below) and as a poet (buy my poetry here), it is insanely relatable, for better or worse. You’ve also got a trip-inducing pepper, Johnny Cash as a spiritual space coyote, a meaningful lesson to be learn about the strains of marriage, and even a brief glimpse at the the burdens of furniture salesmen. This episodes exceeds all others in my extremely biased opinion. Go isotopes!

“Marge: Every time you go to that cook-off, you get as drunk as a poet on payday. Don't you remember what happened last year? [Flashback to the previous year, in which a naked Homer frolics inside a cotton candy machine, a bottle of Duff in each hand]
Homer: Look at me... I'm a puffy pink cloud! [He climbs out of the machine, scaring several kids, then lies down on the ground, where dogs lick at him. Back to the present] Well, of course, everything looks bad if you remember it. Now where are my chili boots?”
