You Were Supposed to Be the End: A Multiple Genre Playlist for the End of an Era

In 2017, as old friendships were drifting toward bittersweet conclusions and existing ones were changing dramatically as I grappled with fatherhood, I built a multiple genre playlist that felt like a map of the emotional terrain: rap, rock, jazz, alternative, all stitched together like a patchwork of the person I was and the person I was becoming. The mix orbits heavily around Atmosphere, the Minnesota rapper who always seemed to understand the quiet ache beneath the bravado. It opens with “Apple,” a cracked mirror held up to the early warning signs, and it closes with “The Shit We’ve Been Through,” which lands like a final, exhausted exhale. Between those two poles, Atmosphere remains heavily prevalent.

This multiple genre playlist is built for someone standing at the edge of a life they thought they’d keep forever. 10 Years, Yes, and King Crimson provide the rock backbone before the mood softens into the jazzy, alternative warmth of Stacey Kent, Fiona Apple’s “Please, Please, Please.”

But the center of the mix is chaos, which I admit was of my own doing, but I was a young father with a 1 year old and 8 year old at the time, to be fair. Hed PE, Kendrick Lamar, Marilyn Manson, and more Atmosphere tracks carved out the middle stretch, a collision of rap and rock conveying the emotional whiplash of that time. And then “Issues” by Julia Michaels brings us back down to Earth – Alien Ant Farm provides an honest please keeping “what I feel is mine” – the person I’d be without the influence of others.

By the time the playlist loops back to Atmosphere for its closing track, the story has already been told: we’ve been through some shit. This multiple genre playlist is a time capsule like all of my music playlists – and 2017 was a turbulent year for me personally. This mix was in fact supposed to be my last mix, hence the title “You Were Supposed to Be the End.” As I am on mix #93 at the moment… the tradition as continued.

What are the rules for the mixes? They’re self-imposed but the main one is that I never reuse a track. I can reuse a song from another mix but it must be another version (cover, live, or remix). As of the Mix 92: Do You See What Happens When You Fuck with a Poet? – there are 2008 unique tracks throughout these little playlists.
